Our History

Although the Group was in existence prior to 1944, the Monaghan Town Scout Group ‎was reformed in May 1944 by Seamus and Gerard Magill and has been in existence ‎continuously since then. ‎

The story goes:‎
Three uniformed boys wearing the orange and green neckerchiefs of the Cavan Troop ‎of Catholic Boy Scouts arrived in Monaghan Town on bicycles completing one of their ‎First-Class Tests, which required a journey of 30 miles. The month was April and the ‎year was 1944. It so happened that Gerard Magill and Philip Mac Dermott were very ‎interested onlookers as they had been previously discussing the possibility of ‎reforming the scouts in Monaghan town. ‎

And the rest, as they say is history! There was great excitement among the youth in ‎Monaghan when they heard that the scouts were being formed and at the first meeting ‎of the group in St Joseph’s Hall on the 4th May 1944 nearly 50 boys were present.‎

The first Scout hall was below St Joseph’s hall, and then it moved to the Hibernian hall ‎on the Broad road. After some years they had to move again to an old loft at the ‎Westenra. Due to these unsettlements and the need for a permanent location Bishop ‎O’Callaghan built the Scout troop the current hall in 1952 at Latlorcan. ‎

‎80 years later the Group is still operating from the Latlorcan Scout Den.‎
